Nowhere To Go? Then Know Where To Go

After a rather entertaining conversation with a male friend this past weekend I have come to realise that women are born with an extra special gene reserved just for shopping, and that men (bless them) are born with an anti-shopping gene. Of course, they’ll tell you quite the opposite. Hearing a man talk about his shopping prowess is quite something – you’ll hear all about their plan of action going in (OPERATION Buy Brown Lace-up Shoes) and how they tackle shopping with a type of military precision (get in, acquire target, get out). But, speak to that same man after a shopping mission and suddenly all that boasting is out the window; all you get are complaints about how there are too many shops and how very stressful it all is. Luckily for men everywhere there’s always a shopping veteran (more affectionately known as mothers, sisters, girlfriends and wives) close by to hold their hands as they proceed into battle.

In other news, I’ve found another list of wonderful things for you to try in Joburg this week. Here are my Top 5 Picks for the Week:

  1. The Bryanston Organic and Natural Market is hosting a wonderful Freedom Day Food Festival on Saturday 27 April. With food stalls selling delicious treats to snack on, and talks and demonstrations by some of Jozi's favourite foodiesthere’s just no excuse not to go! Plus, I have TWO market vouchers valued at R500 to give away this week!
  2. If you love beer then you’ll want to make sure you book now for the Reefsteamers Beer Tasting Steam Train to Magaliesburg on Saturday 25 May. Indulge in delicious brews from the De Garve Micro Brewery as you sit back in the carriage and watch the stunning scenery flit by.
  3. I paid a visit to Sandton’s newest Asian restaurant, Gwefey, and absolutely loved it. They’ve got delicious dishes from all over Asia and some fantastic weekly dim sum and drinks specials.
  4. I'm also completely obsessed with Filo Frozen Yoghurt in Victory Park Shopping Centre. The little cups of frozen awesomeness are the perfect morning or afternoon snack and I absolutely can’t resist getting a dollop whenever I visit the shopping centre.
  5. Take the family to the Riverside Carnival REEA Fundraiser for a fun day out in the sun. Take part in the potjie competition, marvel at the vintage car display and shop at the various stalls while the little ones can enjoy the carousel and many other fun kiddies’ activities.

Something else on my radar this month are the Guvon Hotel and Spas’ Sparty Time package deals. The spa parties are the perfect way to spend some quality time with your mom or to pamper your girlfriend before her wedding day. Head through to the Kloofzicht Spa, Chicama Country Spa, Askari Spa or The Fairway Spa to indulge in a little me time at one or more of their fab events. Book now for the Fairway Spa and Pure Romance Ladies Nights ; the Chicama Spa Mommy Mornings or book a spa bridal shower.

If you’re looking for a laugh this month then head down to Gold Reef City Casino for theall-girl stand-up showBitches, at The Lyric Theatre (26 and 27 April). Directed by local comedy genius, John Vlismas, the show is the first large scale platform for female comedians, and promises to have audiences in stitches with their combination of sketch and stand-up comedy. Book now to see Mel Jones, Tumi Morake, Tracy Klaas and Anele Mdoda live on stage.

It’s also time to start thinking about how you’re going to spoil your mother this Mother’s Day. If you’ve yet to make a decision then Maropeng has two very exciting options that mom will just LOVE! Treat her to a relaxing head and neck massage followed by a three-course lunch at the Maropeng Hotel, or take the whole family for a delicious carvery lunch at the Tumulus Restaurant.

I’m also super excited for The Wine Show Joburg this year (3 – 5 May). The show has moved to the Sandton Convention Centre and will once again offer wine-lovers the chance to taste hundreds of wines from all over South Africa. With over 100 of SA’s best wine producers under one roof this is one show you can’t afford to miss! Plus, this week I’ve got two R400 hampers to give away, which include tickets to The Wine Show Joburg and wine from Bosman Family Vineyards!

That’s all from me, have a wonderful week.
